My name is David Binns. I began working out three years ago and while I was able to lose weight, I still lacked tone. I began lifting but only showed very small results after a year. Since I have started training with Armen, I have gained about 8 lbs of muscle in a short 3 months. I have more energy, better stamina, and my workout regimen has improved as well to be more rounded. These are things that I tried to do myself by reading books on the subject but that I am now convinced only comes with years experience and an extended education in training. These are both things that Armen possesses and has used to guide me to very favorable results. Using his advice I have improved my diet, and focused on foods that help burn fat and build muscle. My workouts have reached new levels with him pushing me to attain the best results. Armen has also helped me to create a workout schedule for the whole week, not just at personal training. Surprising reasons you’re gaining weight.

In some cases, it’s easy to figure out why you’re gaining weight. You ate too much on vacation or got injured, so it became difficult to work out. Other times, it can be hard to determine the cause of weight gain. You eat right and get enough exercise, but the scale keeps going up. When this happens, the weight gain can be frustrating and discouraging.

Discovering the reason for the weight gain can help you regain control and reach your weight loss goals. So what surprising reasons are you putting on pounds?

You’re Stressed

Don’t be surprised to gain a few pounds when you’re stressed out. A new job, moving to a new home, caring for aging parents, or ongoing financial concerns can make your waistline expand. The stress hormone cortisol increases your appetite, makes you crave comfort foods, and keeps you from quality sleep. All of these can throw off your metabolism and lead to weight gain.

Thankfully, stress doesn’t have to result in extra pounds. Learn healthy ways of managing stress. Get regular exercise, practice deep breathing exercises, find some hobbies, and spend time with friends.

You Take Medications

Unfortunately, many medications come with the unwanted side effect of weight gain. Some are more likely than others. Medications that often cause weight gain include:

  • Allergy medications
  • Antidepressants
  • Antipsychotic drugs
  • Anti-seizure medications
  • Blood pressure medications
  • Diabetes medications
  • Migraines medications
  • Steroids

Talk with your doctor if you suspect your medication is causing your weight gain. There may be another medication for your condition that doesn’t cause weight gain.

You’re Getting Older

Along with wrinkles and gray hair, aging may cause your clothes to get a bit tighter. As you age, your basal metabolic rate (BMR) slows down. BMR is the speed at which your body burns energy while resting. Pair a lower BMR with less exercise and reduced muscle mass and you’ll likely gain weight.

The best way to increase your BMR is by increasing your muscle mass through strength training exercises. This means you can’t have a pure cardio workout routine. Instead, go with two to three sessions of strength training each week. You can also boost your metabolism by eating more protein and fewer carbs.

You Have Health Conditions

Unexplainable weight gain may warrant a trip to your doctor. In some cases, it can be caused by an underlying health condition. Hypothyroidism occurs when your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormone, a key player in regulating metabolism. See your doctor if your weight gain is accompanied by fatigue, weakness, dry skin, or feeling cold.

Weight gain is also a common side effect of Cushing’s syndrome, a condition linked to excessive cortisol in the body. Cushing’s syndrome can be caused by steroid medications, an adrenal gland problem, or a tumor. Early signs include weight gain (especially in the neck, face, upper back, or waist), skin that bruises easily, stretch marks, slow-healing wounds, or acne.

Additionally, women may develop polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Affecting as many as a quarter of women worldwide, PCOS causes hormonal imbalances and weight gain, especially around the waist. It does this by affecting insulin, the hormone that helps control blood sugar levels. High blood sugar levels can lead to weight gain. PCOS is also accompanied by acne, excess body hair, and irregular cycles.

Your Diet

Take a close look at your daily diet. You may be making wise food choices, but your portions may be too large. It’s possible your weight gain is attributed to eating too many healthy foods. Remember, healthy, whole, organic foods have calories too. Yes, nuts and avocados are super healthy, but they’re also high in calories. And a salad may be a diet-friendly meal, but it’s easy to overdo it on the salad dressing.

Pay attention to your body’s cues for hunger and fullness. Practice mindful eating without distractions and limit your portion sizes. Then your healthy choices will be healthy indeed!
